dog-at-rest-by-gerrit-dou
Dog at Rest by Gerrit Dou

Gerrit Dou (1613–1675) was a Dutch painter, born in Leiden on April 7, 1613, and buried there on February 9, 1675. As a young man he trained in the glazier’s trade in Leiden, first with the engraver Bartholomeus Willemsz. Dolendo and then with the glazier Pieter Kouwenhorn. In February 1628 he began studying painting with Rembrandt, who was then still in Leiden, and remained with him for about three years. In 1648 he was one of the founding members of the Leiden Guild of St. Luke. Dou was one of the Leiden fijnschilders, or fine painters, a group of artists who produced small pictures with minute detail and close attention to the depiction of different surfaces, and he specialized in night scenes and in the niche format, in which figures are shown through a painted trompe-l’oeil window.

Dog at Rest (1650) is an oil on panel measuring 16.5 x 21.6 cm (6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.). The panel shows a dog curled up on a shelf beside household objects, including an earthenware jug, a bundle of branches, a wicker basket, and a slipper. It is a promised gift of Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in support of the Center for Netherlandish Art (accession number L-R 250.2017). Cornelis Hofstede de Groot listed it as no. 382 in the first volume of his catalogue raisonné of seventeenth-century Dutch painters.

Art Print

An unframed print on paper, ready to pair with your choice of frame.

Gallery Canvas

A stretched canvas presentation with the artwork continuing around mirrored sides.

Framed Canvas

A stretched canvas set within a frame.
