He began training as an artist in 1852, worked in Frederic Leighton's studio in Rome in 1853 and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1855. From 1856 he spent three years in the Paris studio of the Swiss painter Charles Gleyre, where his fellow students included George du Maurier and James McNeill Whistler. His painting Israel in Egypt (1867) established his reputation. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1869 and a Royal Academician in 1876, became the first Slade Professor of Fine Art at University College London in 1871 and Principal of the National Art Training School in 1875, and served as Director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1904 and as President of the Royal Academy from 1896 to 1918. He died in London on July 26, 1919, and was buried in St Paul's Cathedral.

Feeding the Sacred Ibis in the Halls of Karnac is an oil on canvas signed and dated with the monogram "18EJP71" at lower right. It measures 38 x 29 3/4 in. (96.5 x 75.5 cm). Poynter exhibited it at the Royal Academy in 1871 (no. 238). The design had appeared in 1867 as a wood-engraved illustration in the magazine Once a Week. Sotheby's catalogue describes it as apparently the last of a series of upright single-figure paintings of daily life and ritual in ancient Egypt that Poynter began in the 1860s, and notes that although he had not visited Egypt, his paintings were carefully researched. Its later owners included the collector Merton Russell-Cotes and The Fine Art Society, London, and it was offered as lot 57 in Sotheby's 19th Century European Art sale in New York on May 9, 2013.

Art Print

An unframed print on paper, ready to pair with your choice of frame.

Gallery Canvas

A stretched canvas presentation with the artwork continuing around mirrored sides.

Framed Canvas

A stretched canvas set within a frame.
