At fifteen he began a career as a caricaturist and then as an illustrator, which brought him international fame, before working across drawing, painting, watercolor, engraving and sculpture. He made more than 10,000 drawings for books and periodicals, reproduced by more than 160 engravers, for texts that include Dante's Inferno, the Bible, Orlando Furioso, Don Quixote, Gargantua and Pantagruel, La Fontaine's Fables and Perrault's tales. Largely self-taught, he painted historical, religious, literary and genre subjects as well as landscapes and mountain scenes. From the 1860s his paintings were regularly exhibited in North America, and in London he set up a gallery under his own name, the Doré Gallery, which staged selling exhibitions.

La Prairie (The Meadow) is an oil on canvas of about 1855, signed twice at lower right "G. Doré", once in red and once in yellow. It measures 92.5 x 73 cm (36 3/8 x 28 3/4 in.). It was shown at the Paris Salon of 1855 (no. 2984) and, from 1869, at the Doré Gallery in London, where Edward Hyde Villiers, 5th Earl of Clarendon, bought it in 1883. Research by Dan Malan, cited by the Munich dealer Daxer & Marschall, identifies it as the first of three versions of the subject; the second and largest, Summer, is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The painting was offered by Daxer & Marschall, which lists it as sold.

Art Print

An unframed print on paper, ready to pair with your choice of frame.

Gallery Canvas

A stretched canvas presentation with the artwork continuing around mirrored sides.

Framed Canvas

A stretched canvas set within a frame.
