Pasiphae was the wife of King Minos of Crete. According to the myth, she was cursed by the god Poseidon to fall in love with a bull as a punishment for her husband's refusal to sacrifice the bull to the gods. As a result of this curse, Pasiphae mated with the bull and gave birth to the Minotaur, a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man.
The Minotaur was a monstrous being, and King Minos, upon seeing the creature, ordered the construction of the Labyrinth—a massive, intricate maze designed by Daedalus—to contain the Minotaur. The Labyrinth was so complex that anyone who entered could not find their way out. The Minotaur was kept in the Labyrinth and fed on human sacrifices, which were sent from Athens as tribute following a war between Athens and Crete.
