Zenobia's Last Look on Palmyra by Herbert Gustave Schmalz
Matte art paper. Fine detail. Low glare.
*Requires framing.

Art Prints
Our giclee art prints are produced on heavyweight 200gsm matte art paper chosen for its smooth, non-reflective surface. Unlike glossy prints that throw back reflections from windows and overhead lights, the matte finish scatters light evenly across the sheet, so the artwork reads clearly from every angle and in any room.
Each print is made on precision giclee printers for deep color and fine tonal transitions. Like any work on paper, it keeps its color longest when displayed indoors, away from direct sunlight.
Ships unframed and rolled, ready for the frame of your choice.
*Frame is not included with this option.
Matte fine art paper. Archival pigment inks. Framed and ready to hang.
*Solid wood frame, acrylic glazing and hanging hardware included.
Framed Fine Art Prints
Printed on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Art (EMA) paper, with a smooth matte surface and a natural white tone.
Precision giclée printing with archival pigment inks captures fine detail, rich colour and subtle tonal transitions.
Each print is presented in a solid wood Classic frame, available in eight finishes: Black, White, Natural, Brown, Dark Grey, Light Grey, Antique Gold and Antique Silver. The profile measures 20mm across the face and 22mm deep, giving the artwork a clean, understated surround. Acrylic glazing covers the print, with no mount or mat between the image and frame. Hanging hardware is fitted so the piece arrives ready to hang.
*Solid wood frame, acrylic glazing and hanging hardware included.
Sizing and delivery
US orders use the stated inch print size. UK and EU orders use the stated centimetre print size. Sizes describe the print fitting, not the outer frame. The frame lip covers a narrow edge of the image.
Available for delivery in the United States, United Kingdom and supported European Union destinations. This format is not available for Australia or Canada.
Stretched over pine. Matte, low-glare finish. Ready to hang.
*Ready to hang out of the box.

Gallery Canvas
Each canvas is printed on a 333 g/m² cotton-polyester composite with a proprietary coating that produces deep blacks, rich saturation, and accurate tonal transitions. The matte finish absorbs light rather than reflecting it, reducing glare from windows and overhead lighting so the artwork stays readable from any position in the room.
Like any painting, your canvas keeps its color longest when displayed indoors, away from direct sunlight.
The canvas is gallery-wrapped over a 1.25 inch (3.2 cm) radiata pine stretcher bar from renewable forests. A sawtooth hanger and rubber bumpers come pre-installed on the back, so the piece is ready to hang the moment it arrives.
*No framing required.
Solid wood floater frame. Floating reveal. Gallery-ready.
*Available on the framed canvas option.

Framed Canvas
The floater frame is milled from solid wood with a matte finish that absorbs light instead of bouncing it back. Unlike glossy mouldings that pick up room reflections, the matte finish keeps attention on the artwork.
The frame sits slightly outside the canvas edge, creating a narrow floating reveal. This gap gives the wrapped canvas a suspended, weightless look, the same presentation used in contemporary galleries.
Inside the frame, the canvas is the same 333 g/m² cotton-polyester composite, stretched over a pine stretcher bar. Every piece ships with hanging hardware pre-installed.
*Available on the framed canvas option.
Behind every print
From masterpiece to your wall
Every painting here is restored one by one with patient human retouching, much of it in Photoshop, then composed for each print shape and checked area by area before it is offered. Nothing is printed until you order.
Restored
Dust, scratches and distracting damage retouched away. The brushwork left as it is.
Real details from paintings we offer, before and after, at the same scale.
Age cracks in the veil
Age cracks across the Virgin's white veil, retouched line by line. The brushstrokes underneath are left as they are.
Detail from The Virgin in Prayer, Sassoferrato
Drag to compare. Choose a painting for another detail.
Restored, area by area
Before a painting is offered here, it is retouched area by area at 100% zoom, much of it in Photoshop, to remove the marks that time and scanning left on it.
It's patient human work, not a one-click filter. Every repair is rebuilt from the painting's own surrounding detail, so nothing new is invented or painted in, and faces, hands and brushwork are protected throughout.
Removed
- Dust and specks
- Scratches
- Stains and spots
- Scanner marks
- Varnish glare
- Age cracks, where they break the image
Protected
- Brushwork
- Faces and hands
- Figures and detail
Composed
One painting, many proportions. A composition for each.
Shown live for this painting. Choose a size to see its crop.
Shaded areas fall outside the print.
Composed for every shape
Frames and canvases come in standard proportions, so we compose each print shape separately instead of stretching the image, and we keep the signature in the crop when we can.
We avoid sizes that would cut into a face, a figure or the heart of the scene. On canvas, the whole crop stays on the front and the sides carry a mirrored edge.

The queen who defied Rome looks at her city for the last time. In the 1888 painting Zenobia's Last Look on Palmyra by the English painter Herbert Gustave Schmalz (1856-1935), Zenobia, queen of Palmyra, looks at her city from a high terrace, while Roman soldiers wait below.
After her husband was killed in 267, Zenobia ruled Palmyra as regent for her son and extended her realm from Ancyra, modern Ankara, in Anatolia to Upper Egypt; in 272, the Roman emperor Aurelian took her captive.
The gold chain hanging from her wrist recalls what followed: according to the Historia Augusta, which recounts the lives of Roman emperors, Zenobia was made to walk in Aurelian's triumphal procession in Rome in shackles of gold, but her life was spared. The painting is now in the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide.
